Mobile County Blueway
The Master Plan seeks to identify opportunities for the creation of safe, sustainable, and accessible paddling infrastructures and protect environmental resources.
It does this through the establishment of best practices for implementation and maintenance of blueway infrastructure. Other goals include: equitable access, equitable economic development, promotion of regional relationships, community education around blueways and paddling resources, enhancement of public health, and highlighting the unique character and identity of the waterways.
The project team evaluated hundreds of potential sites throughout Mobile County, and the final Master Plan includes 7 distinct blueways, offering 237 navigable miles of paddle trails. Watershed provided best practices and conceptual design for blueway site development and facilities such as pavilions, changing room, restrooms, and bird blinds (shown below) at the 55 identified access points along the trails.
Blueway Trails identified in the plan include:
Escatawpa River Blueway
Ron Jones
3 Mile Creek Blueway
Dog River Blueway
Fowl River Blueway
Dauphin Island Blueway
River to Bay Blueway
The final Mobile County Blueway Master Plan is a robust working document with a full market analysis, branding resources, and best practices for implementation intended to help the county develop and manage the blueway trails for maximum community benefit.
