Art Collectors’ Cottage
A space for art with an open, single-level floor plan adaptable for multigenerational living.
Watershed was asked to design the renovation of a historic home in Fairhope, to accommodate a multigenerational family and a collection of cherished artwork. The residence had a split-level plan with open areas that couldn’t accommodate everyone safely. The previous design had 1990’s-era renovations that diluted the home’s historic charm and created a split-level kitchen with steep stairs that posed a hazard to family and guests.
Our clients challenged us to create distinct and quiet rooms to play, read, or watch tv, while maintaining a sense of openness. As art collectors, they also needed a safe display space with good lighting.
The new design creates an open single-level floor plan that is adaptable for multigenerational living. The main living space is defined by folding glass doors, which separate a family media room from the kitchen, dining area, and living room. The kitchen opens onto a new screened porch for outdoor relaxation and overlooks a children’s play area in the backyard.
A study/home office space was carved out of an over-sized bedroom, and a professional gallery rail allows maximum flexibility in displaying the couple’s extensive art collection.
